For over 1000 years, Jerusalem served as the political, religious and economic capital for our people. In 70 CE the Second Temple was destroyed and everything we knew changed. How would we emerge from this jarring transition? Who would lead the way? The rabbis assumed a strong role in helping to re-establish the Torah. Of course they weren’t alone.
